| Bonita School Bike Give Away Contest held June 8th was a grand success as 300 students gathered in the cafeteria and were held captive by the Principal, Cheryle Paglialonga. She kept everyone perfectly quiet and enamored by asking her students for drum rolls for each winner and by reading the winning essays with excitement in her voice. Tailwinds presentations were given with Dave Cantero, President, introducing the program expertly. Presentations on bike safety were given by Victor Cabatuan who showed the children his helmet to let them see for themselves the importance of wearing a helmet and explained what a statistic is. A presentation on how to lock your bike by Gary Shaw, who asked how many had had their bikes stolen--200 out of 300 raised their hands which surprised everyone and gave everyone some understanding. There is power in knowledge. The winning essays were read and four bikes were presented to the four first place winning students with helmets promised to runner-ups. The helmets were not available at the time of the presentation and will be given when they come in. Main Street Cycles who is teamed with Bonita School provided excellent quality bikes at their cost to us for $800 for 8 helmets, 4 locks, and four bikes. Ice cream was donated to the 300 students who participated in writing the essays at a cost of $51 to Tailwinds and our donation was truly appreciated by the children, teachers, and principal. The contest encourages our youth to keep physically fit, expand their world, and reward writing skills. Bonita School is temporarily relocated to the Stowell and Railroad Street location in Santa Maria. |
